Cover 2
Two deep safeties, soft zone underneath.
Two deep safeties split the field, five underneath in zone, corners playing soft. Strong vs. the deep ball, soft in the flats and light in the box.
How each scheme beats it
Air Raid
Flood concepts — vertical, out, and flat to one side overload the flat defender. Seam routes split the safeties; the middle opens behind the linebackers.
West Coast
Smash: hitch plus corner — the corner route drops behind the flat defender every time. Quick game underneath, and run the ball vs. the light box.
Power Run (Gap)
Run it downhill — Cover 2 usually means 6 or 7 in the box. Play-action post splits the safeties; with both safeties deep, the linebackers are isolated.
Wide Zone
Outside zone vs. soft corners that don't want to tackle. Bootleg flood to the boundary; play-action seam behind the linebackers.
Spread Option
Read the edge — soft corners and a light box invite the QB run game. Play-action seams; RPOs freeze the underneath defenders.
Vertical
The classic Cover 2 beater: seams between the safeties. Deep posts split them — if the safeties widen with the outside verticals, the middle post is wide open.
